Procedures
As a specialist orthopaedic hospital, Vitosha has extensive expertise across a small range of procedures. We are committed to excellence in the following operations.
At Vitosha Hospital we use an innovative technique in our total hip replacement surgery which ensures minimal blood loss, and means our patients don’t need blood transfusions.
This technique’s also associated with much faster patient recovery, and very low post-surgical complications – elsewhere you’d expect problems in three to five percent of cases, here at Vitosha in the last five years we’ve had virtually none at all.
This innovative method also provides for more stable joints – so a lot of the post-operative restrictions you’d find at other hospitals don’t apply here. So for example, our patients can sit in normal chairs and sleep on their side without the risk of problems, from the earliest days after their hip replacements.
And – we expect them to be on their feet the day after their surgery, walking up and down stairs within a few days after that, and ready for discharge within five to six days, or even sooner.
At Vitosha Hospital we use a precision technique in our total knee replacement surgery that ensures minimal blood loss and quicker rehabilitation.

From the earliest days after their knee replacements, our patients can walk with full weight-bearing without the risk of problems.

Total hip and knee replacements are some of the most successful of all medical procedures.
For the vast majority of people they mean a new start – a more active life with no more debilitating pain.
But, after twelve to eighteen years, hip and knee replacements can fail, due to the normal process of the implants becoming loose within the bone, so sometimes it’s necessary to remove some or all of the original prosthetic joints, and replace them with new ones.
Revision arthroplasty as it’s called, is a longer, more complex surgery than a first-time hip or knee replacement. It calls for careful planning, and the use of special revision implants and tools.
Vitosha Hospital is a dedicated orthopaedic service, with the specialist knowledge and skills to carry out this intricate operation. We can help you make a speedy recovery, and get back to independent living, with far fewer of the restrictions on motion that patients have at other hospitals.
Leg lengthening is a cosmetic surgical procedure which aims to increase a patient’s height by slowly and gently lengthening the lower limbs.
This is done by carefully dividing the tibia and fibula, and supporting them in a frame, while the bone grows back longer than before.
It’s a complex procedure and requires thorough pre-operative planning, meticulously skilled surgery, and careful follow-up.
At Vitosha Hospital we use both the Ilizarov and the magnetic lengthening nails techniques. The Ilizarov technique is a minimally invasive procedure with a low rate of complications. Patients are encouraged to move during the treatment procedure, but without bearing body weight until bone union is achieved. Legs can also be lengthened with the use of magnetic lengthening nails, but the implants used can be very expensive, so most patients choose the Ilizarov technique option.
At Vitosha Hospital we work with patients on reconstructing limbs that have been deformed from birth (club foot etc.), or have acquired a deformity through illness or trauma later on in life.
These deformities can occur after unsuccessful fracture treatment, or be caused by a high-energy trauma, such as a car crash. The techniques we use with great success include limb equalisation, correction of rotational and angular deformities, and correction of mal and non-unions of the bone.
Our surgeons are fully familiar with the techniques of reconstructive surgery. Correcting deformities and reconstructions are time-consuming procedures, requiring special skills and training. Such procedures are usually very expensive, but we can offer options that are much more affordable compared to hospitals in other parts of Europe.
